The City of Skamania announces the Completion of the Willamette Highway
In order to increase freight capacity the city fathers hired Sam Hill, best known for his vision in the construction of "good roads," and the engineer Samuel C. Lancaster, builder of the historic Columbia River Highway from 1913-1922, to design a scenic mountain pass "designed with elegance to take full advantage of all the natural beauty along the route." This new highway offers stunning views of Lake Goose Hollow and the growing city of Skamania along the shoreline. The Crown Point overlook, near Willamette Pass summit, offers weary travelers a place to eat, shop and admire the view.
