As Wellington nears the population mark of 1.5 million inhabitants, the Government of New England decided to build a new 1700-bed hospital to relieve the chronic pressure off from the existing Royal Wellington Hospital in Randwick. The RWH is the central hospital in the metropolitan region. The new, proposed hospital will be significantly larger than any other hospitals in the region including Royal Stockport Hospital which is the second largest hospital in the region.

The new hospital will be located on a disused land that originally housed the railway depot and warehouses which all were demolished in 1992. The land remained vacant since. The new hospital will officially be named as the Margaret Turner Hospital - named in honour of Margaret Turner, the first female doctor in New England. Dr Turner worked at Sacred Hearts Infirmary near Newtown from 1893 until her death in 1954. All her work was left unrecognised until 2010 when she was finally awarded Honorary Medal by the Prime Minister of New England and the President of New England Medical Association (NEMA).



According to the Blueprint for the Margaret Turner Hospital development, it will include a 1700-bed, 15 storey hospital with three residential highrise apartment buildings. It will also include a new underground bus rapid transit station to serve both the hospital and the existing stadium. The Government also intends to build a large indoor sports and swimming centre next to the hospital.

The Government of New England hopes that the Margaret Turner Hospital development will spark a market-led interest in developing a new transit oriented development across the road from the stadium and hospital precinct. The new transit oriented development will be located next to the existing Shoreditch railway station. Within 1 kilometre walking radius around the new hospital site, there are three existing railway stations (Shoreditch, Ivanhoe and Auburn). If the transit oriented development project ever gets off the ground, the Government of New England will invest $410 million toward major upgrades for Shoreditch and Ivanhoe railway stations to cope with extra pressure coming from the new developments and the stadum itself. The new Margaret Turner underground bus rapid transit will be built to a capacity of 26,000 passengers an hour for BRT buses.


The Government's vision for a future transit oriented development on a vacant land near the Hospital/Stadium precinct and the existing Shoreditch station. The large grassland between existing residential areas and proposed highrise buildings will be a new park with sport facilities.
