Thank you :) Actually just about 10 to 15 maps over the past 3 years, I would say, @Project_Oz :)
I choose every map wisely ;) This time, I really need some relief from that French city I had been working on during the last challenge. American cities in general are so much less complex than European cities, it's really relaxing to build such :)

Very nice start @kipate ! :) Looks really promising - I just hope we'll see more than just this :D maybe you could build larger parts of the city first and then add the many details and stuff you're known for (y)

I am experimenting to build a Bulgarian city for the upcoming competition. This is one of the central squares of the town Albenovo (the name is subject to change).

Albenovo, a Bulgarian town on the Black Sea coast, is (at least planned to be) a former-industrial town of the Socialist era. Thanks to its gateway to the greater Black Sea, the town occupied an essential place in the industry chain of the socialist Bulgaria.

However, I have two problems. One of them is the problem with the Petersburg mods (you can see most of them in the picture below), their bases are variable and corner buildings are a bit scarce compared to the other mods. I am concerned that the buildings will be repetitive due to the scarcity.

The other fact is the Bulgarian architecture, even though the Russian and Bulgarian architecture is close in style, I have found out (after certain level of research on google and google maps), the white-roofed buildings are not that common in Bulgaria vis-a-vis Russia. To be honest, most Bulgarian buildings (if one excludes Sofia, which is relatively "European") most eastern Bulgarian city buildings are red-roofed. This leads to the second problem, I am concerned about the very probable incompatibility between the German and Petersburg mods. What do you think? I look forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions.

Your idea is wonderful and the name is perfect ! (my sister's name is Albena and a like it very much :) ). In my current city I'm building using both German and Russian style buildings and I do not find it incompatible, which of course is my opinion.
Typicall for Bulgarian cities is that they, especially the big ones, develope after the liberation in 1878 and they start trying to copy the western cities, especially these from Austria-Hungary and Germany, as the royal dynasty comes from there. Russian style buildings in the city centers are not that common, except for the huge ones, which want to represent the glory of the communism. :D
Perfect will be German buildings for the ideal center, after that the wide center is nice to be filled with medium density non collision box buildings, which can be even little chaotic, to resemble the rapid development of the city, and the neighbourhood with a lot of Soviet panel buildings.

Well thanks for the suggestions. It's good to have similar-minded opinions. I have been twice to Plovdiv and Sofia once, and the difference between the two was huge. The downtown of Sofia has a really European architecture whereas Plovdiv (probably, due to the Ottoman occupation for centuries) remains quite similar to the Turkish architecture. I have also investigated Burgas and particularly Varna and found out that apart from the city centre the Russian/neo-Byzantine architecture is severely limited. From your suggestion, I come to the conclusion that I am on the right track.

And when it comes to the decayed Soviet buildings in the neighbourhoods and particulary in the peripheries, that's why I want to build a old-socialist city! :sneaky:

Your observation about our cities is very right! Actually all our cities, including Sofia, keep their Ottoman past somewhere. Actually till the 80s of 19th century Sofia is not different than any other Ottoman city, but this was not liked by the royal dynasty, which comes here, after the city becomes a capital in 1879. Hence they destroy the old orientalic shape of the city to make space for the neo-Renaissane style buildings, developed by Chech and Austrian architects. But till its announcement for a capital,Sofia was not quite important, neither developed city. Plovdiv, on the other hand ,was very important in 19th century, because of the rose oil production and quite cosmopolitic city with a lot of Chechs, Armenians, Greeks, Bulgarians and Turkish living there. That is the reason they manage to keep their old quarter, which is the best today in Bulgaria. Burgas and Varna usually were small towns, which start develop after the liberation, mainly because of the port industry, that is why you can see more Russian style buildings there, although as you mentioned, they are limited indeed.
Sorry for this historical off-topic! :giggle: To not be out of the topic, I can suggest, if you are building a city on the Black sea coast, you can add some Greek ancient ruins, here at Xlnation there is a perfect mod for it. Almost all of our cities on the coast are established by Greek colonists in 5-4 c. B.C. and a lots of them have ruins in the city centers, although they are not developed.:)

Thanks for the historical background! I am quite familiar with the destruction of Ottoman structures, which is usually called de-Ottomanization. The historical background for a city we develop should not be off-topic. I mean, people may find the discussion boring, but I pay attention to the historical roots of any city I design. :)

As the map is on the mouth of a extended river system, I thought it would be best to have a Bulgarian city on the Black Sea front. When it comes to the Greek ruins, I do already have a tendency for building ancient Greek sites for the (see Dodurka village on the map) cities I build, so I can definitely consider an ancient Greek village with a amphiteatre and ruins of an old temple. :sneaky:

Wow, awesome job, I love all the little details (y) And it has my name on it? :D Well, if I own a big ass oil tanker, then I must be quite rich :p

By the way, the XXL railways do also work for XL, so you don't need these old railways that you are using ;) Also, the new railways opt for switches and crossings, which is pretty cool:

You can do pretty cool stuff:

Thx for railways, i will test them. The shipyard is yours no't the ship(y). From you I took the idea to build the dry dock. The problem is that I discovered too late that the decorations are not aligned with the shipyard and I could not really put too much detail.

SOUTHCLIFFE PENINSULA - A Cadastral Map of Southcliffe City 1968 - PDF link. This map looks better downloaded and re-opened with adobe or another PDF viewer, the online preview doesn't do it justice. The file is 22mb, so its super high resolution, took me some time to create this and try to be as accurate as possible.

What do you guys think? There is other maps to come as part of my forever pending City journal. I got this printed in super size poster for my office to bring a little fun from the game into the real world!! I love maps from this mid-century era.

4K screens - zoom in to 300% for best effect
normal computer screens - around 418% zoom
